PREPARING YOUR SAMPLE

How do I know whether the solvent resonances will interfere with those of my sample?
Assuming that you have some idea of the identity of your sample, consult Possible Overlap Regions for Common NMR Solvents. This chart shows structural groups for which chemical-shift overlap might be a concern. An indication of a possible overlap does not mean that a particular solvent should not or cannot be used if that structural group is present. These groups resonate over a wide range, and solvent exhibit very specific resonances, so it may be possible to distinguish solvent from sample peaks.
